19 KCSE Officials Suspended as 31 Mobile Phones and Exam Cheats Found at Kisii School..

In a shocking revelation, 19 officials overseeing the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams at Kebabe SDA Mixed Day and Boarding High School in Kisii County have been suspended following the discovery of widespread cheating. The scale of the incident has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the national exams.

Among those suspended are the school’s Center Manager, Deputy Center Manager, two supervisors, and 15 invigilators. The cheating was uncovered when a routine monitoring visit by a Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) officer led to the discovery of 31 mobile phones and other illicit materials inside the school, including answers and shorthand notes, all of which were used to aid students during the ongoing exams.

“It was reported by a KNEC officer that while conducting exam monitoring duties at Kebabe SDA Mixed Day and Boarding High School, he found a total of 31 mobile phones in one of the boys’ dormitories. Three of these phones were recovered in one of the examination rooms, containing questions and answers for the Biology and CRE subjects that were being examined that day,” a police report states.

The report also mentioned that shorthand notes with exam-related information were found during the second session of the exams.

Once the materials were discovered, authorities immediately notified the Sub County Director of Education’s office, which dispatched a team to collect the illicit items. The materials were then handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenyenya, Kisii County, where investigations are now underway.

As the investigation continues, this incident raises serious questions about the security and fairness of the KCSE exams. The discovery of such widespread cheating underscores the urgent need for stricter measures to ensure the integrity of Kenya’s examination system.
