The much-anticipated 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results have been released, with 1,693 candidates earning a mean grade A, marking a notable increase from 1,216 in 2023. Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba highlighted this achievement during the announcement, attributing the success to the new grading system introduced last year.
The updated grading system, which now focuses on two core subjects—Mathematics and one language (English, Kiswahili, or Kenya Sign Language)—has replaced the previous model that included five subjects across various clusters. This shift aims to provide a more focused assessment of students’ abilities.
CS Ogamba emphasized the transparency of the examination process, noting that candidates’ papers were marked anonymously. The number of students meeting the direct university entry threshold (grade C+ and above) rose to 246,391, representing 25.53% of the candidates, up from 22.27% in 2023.
Further analysis shows that 476,889 candidates scored a C-, while 605,774 attained D+ and above, indicating overall improved performance. However, 48,333 candidates received an E grade, with a breakdown of 20,112 women and 28,221 men.
In addressing exam integrity, CS Ogamba reported that 840 results were canceled due to irregularities, while 2,829 results are under investigation. He assured that disciplinary measures will be enforced against 91 professionals and teachers implicated in exam malpractices.
The release of the 2024 KCSE results highlights significant academic strides and underscores the ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of the examination process. With these reforms, stakeholders are hopeful for continued progress and fairness in Kenya’s education system.
