Kierangi Primary school in Kiambeere ward leaves netizens in awe for its devastating condition.

For decades now since the launch of free primary education by the late former president Mwai Kibaki, Education sector continues to scramble, facing a number of  challenges, much of which are engineered by poor leadership. As the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, Education is among the top priorities for and key indicators of global development. But even as we celebrate how far we have come as a country, there are still so many more issues to address in order to ensure inclusive and equitable and fair quality education for all.

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”  Malcolm X once observed.

Kierangi primary school is one of many devastating and heartbreaking schools in Kenyans marginalised areas. Whereas we boost our education system as a country, and even rank among the top in the continent, there still much to be done. The school which was posted by one online user has since sparked mixed reactions, with netizens wondering if indeed there is leadership in the area.

It’s structures, made of mud and on the verge of collapsing any material time speaks large for the schools other infrastructures and access to basic necessary learning materials.”The problem with Kenya is too much policing and very little to show” One user commented. One can imagine how much struggles the learners go through on a day to day life of their learning.

Education is the answer to all the difficulties facing mankind – whether climate change, terrorism, racism, or extremism. It is only through education that children are prepared for the future, and we can only prepare for the future by championing equality and making education accessible to all.

Education is internationally recognized as a basic need. Students from marginalized areas also have to deal with the unequal distribution of learning materials, inadequate or unqualified teachers, poor school infrastructure – for example, learning might be conducted under a tree in some areas – and disruption of learning activities. These disruptions might result from bandit and terror attacks as well as migration.

With this in mind, the leadership must raise to the occasion and act. We can achieve much through education, but we must first ensure that our systems of education presents fair learning environment to all learners.
