The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has raised concerns about national unity following the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
NCIC Chairman Samuel Kobia cautioned that if the Senate impeaches the DP, it could spark tensions between the Mt. Kenya region and other parts of the country. “Our main concern is that the impeachment process could fuel conflicts between residents of Mt. Kenya and other regions,” Kobia said.
He also urged the Senate to approach the matter impartially. “We urge the Senate to handle this matter in a way that ensures all Kenyans feel the process is fair and lawful,” Kobia added.
Last week, 281 MPs voted to impeach the DP on grounds including abuse of office, undermining devolution, and gross misconduct. However, 44 MPs opposed the motion, and one abstained.
The Senate will now determine the DP’s fate in plenary sessions following the National Assembly’s decision. But with the nation on edge, could this impeachment be the trigger for deeper divisions in Kenya?
