In a remote Zambian village, an unlikely fashion icon is redefining style and stealing hearts worldwide. Meet Margaret Chola, affectionately known as “Legendary Glamma,” an 80-something grandmother who has amassed over 225,000 Instagram followers thanks to her dazzling fashion photoshoots.
This heartwarming journey began in 2023 when her granddaughter, New York-based stylist Diana Kaumba, visited Zambia to honor her late father. With her suitcase full of unworn outfits, Diana had a bold idea: to dress her grandmother, or “Mbuya” in Bemba, in high fashion and capture the magic.
From Farm Life to Fashion Fame
Set against the rustic backdrop of Margaret’s rural farm near Lusaka, the photos are a breathtaking mix of glamour and authenticity. Whether lounging on a leather sofa or posing with maize fields in the background, Margaret exudes confidence and grace.
Her viral breakthrough came in April 2024, when a photo of her in a red Adidas dress, adorned with chunky gold necklaces and a sparkling crown, sent Instagram into a frenzy. “I feel alive and like I can conquer the world,” Margaret shared.
A Wardrobe Worthy of a Queen
From sequined tops and bold sunglasses to vibrant dresses styled in homage to Zambia’s independence, every outfit is a masterpiece. Accessories play a starring role, including oversized hats, chunky jewelry, and even a goat decked out in pearls in a playful tribute to her “GOAT” status.
Margaret’s personal favorite? A pair of jeans, a graphic T-shirt with her own image, and a blonde wig—a look that had her dancing with joy.
Beyond the Fashion
The Granny Series is more than just stunning photos. It’s a testament to love, resilience, and the power of intergenerational bonds. Through these sessions, Diana has learned about her grandmother’s struggles, from an early forced marriage to overcoming addiction and trauma.
Yet Margaret’s message to the world is one of forgiveness and living boldly. “You can’t change your past, but you can shape your future,” she says.
A Legacy of Inspiration
The series has inspired others to celebrate their elders, with Diana now styling grandmothers as old as 96. For Margaret, this newfound fame has been transformative. “I wake up with a purpose knowing people around the world love to see me,” she says.
Stylish, spirited, and unafraid to shine, “Legendary Glamma” reminds us all to embrace life at every stage and leave footprints that future generations will cherish.
