The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has recognized the rising influence of the Embu 7s rugby team by awarding it the hosting rights for the fourth leg of this year’s National Sevens Circuit.
According to Eastern Region Rugby Development Officer Patrick Mwika, the decision is a significant milestone for the region, which has impressed in recent rugby sevens competitions.
“We are honored that the Kenya Rugby Union has granted us the rights to host a leg of the National Sevens Circuit for two years starting this year,” said Mwika.
“This is a very exciting opportunity, especially for clubs within the region and those competing in the nationwide league, as they will now have a chance to test themselves against top-tier teams. It’s also a valuable platform for our age-grade teams from Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi counties to showcase their talent.”
The region already boasts notable success in rugby, being home to the 2024 FEASSA Rugby 15s champions, All Saints Secondary School. Mwika emphasized that collaborative efforts from stakeholders will only help propel the game to greater heights.
“This is big for Embu and the teams in the nationwide league,” he added. “I urge our fans to show up in large numbers and support the event, and I encourage all participating teams to start preparations early.”
Embu was granted a two-year hosting contract, taking over from Tisap 7s whose term in the circuit has ended.
