In a bold move, political activist Morara Kebaso has urged congregants at Soweto Catholic Church in Nairobi County to reject President William Ruto’s Ksh5 million donation, calling it a “trap” that could tarnish the church’s reputation.
Taking to his X account, Morara expressed concern that accepting the donation could compromise the church’s integrity and diminish its moral voice. The activist, known for his vocal critique of the Kenya Kwanza administration, even offered to organize and lead a harambee to raise funds for the construction of the church father’s house, the intended purpose of Ruto’s donation.
“Catholic Church, please, please, please escape this trap. Return that donation. It will ruin your reputation and silence your voice. Let us contribute the money for that house instead. I am ready to lead that harambee,” Morara urged passionately.
Ruto’s Generous Pledges
While addressing congregants at the Soweto Catholic Church earlier, President Ruto pledged Ksh5 million for the construction of the church father’s house, alongside Ksh300,000 for children’s uniforms and a promise to deliver a bus in January. “Your job is to sing to God, not humans,” he remarked, while emphasizing his intent to audit the pledged funds.
Morara’s Perspective
Morara’s critique of the donation reflects a broader concern about the relationship between political leaders and religious institutions. By calling for the rejection of the funds, he highlighted the potential ethical dilemmas that come with accepting large donations from state officials.
As the debate over the donation unfolds, Morara’s offer to spearhead a community-driven fundraiser underscores his commitment to preserving the church’s independence. Whether the Soweto Catholic Church heeds his call remains to be seen, but the controversy raises important questions about the intersection of faith, politics, and accountability in Kenya today.
