‘I don’t remember passing any bonus funds in parliamentary budgets’ – Gathoni Wa Muchomba to Ruto’s sugar bonus

Githunguri MP Gathoni wa Muchomba has criticized President William Ruto regarding the recent launch of a sugarcane bonus program in Mumias.

‘I don’t remember passing any bonus funds in parliamentary budgets’ – Gathoni Wa Muchomba tears into Ruto’s sugar bonus

In a post on her X account on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, the legislator challenged the president, questioning whether the bonus initiative was intended for all sugar companies in Western Kenya or if it was only meant for Mumias.

Wamuchomba’s critique continued as she expressed doubts about the initiative’s legitimacy, stating it was not an officially sanctioned government project.

She emphasized that, as an elected representative, she could not recall any parliamentary session in which funds for sugar bonuses were discussed or approved.

“Hi guys, I don’t know much about sugar farming. But I saw a bonus launch for Mumias sugar farmers. Was it a government initiative? Will all other sugar companies in Western Kenya receive this, and when? I don’t remember passing any bonus funds in parliamentary budgets,” she stated.

Despite admitting her limited knowledge of sugar farming, Wamuchomba expressed her curiosity regarding the lavish launch.

She also highlighted an unfulfilled promise from the president to eliminate the debts burdening both the coffee and sugar sectors. According to her, while there has been some progress in the sugar sector, coffee farmers remain constrained by unmet commitments.

Additionally, Wamuchomba accused the government of abandoning its promoted bottom-up economic model in favor of what she described as regionalism, a transition she claimed was presented under the guise of unity.

Anyway, I hear it’s no longer about Bottom-Up; it’s now called Regionalism—all this while we preach unity for ALL Kenyans,” she quipped.
