Narok County Senator Ledama Olekina has expressed his support for US President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend foreign aid.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Olekina endorsed the move, stressing that it is time for Kenya to embrace independence and emphasizing the need to realign existing resources to benefit the country’s economy.
Olekina defended Trump’s decision by noting his dedication to strengthening the American economy, while also stating that Kenya must put a stop to corruption.
“It’s time to embrace independence! Let’s realign our existing resources and work together to strengthen our economy. President Trump is committed to focusing on building the American economy! Stop corruption and have a sense of patriotism!” he said.
Trump’s decision to suspend foreign aid has sparked mixed reactions among certain Kenyans and political leaders. T
housands of employees involved in U. S. -funded projects are now facing a potential unemployment crisis due to this three-month ban. Shortly after his inauguration on January 20, 2025, Trump mandated a temporary halt on nearly all foreign aid for a review aligned with the “America First” policy.
In response, the Kenyan government announced plans to adjust the national budget to support affected programs.
Principal Secretary for the State Department of Medical Services, Harry Kimtai, confirmed the government’s commitment to this decision, emphasising the need for Kenya to prioritise healthcare in its budgeting process. He also reassured Kenyans that the government is actively addressing the situation at hand.
