Kalonzo: Jail IG Kanja if He Fails to Appear in Court Over Mlolongo Four Disappearance

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has issued a stern warning to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, demanding that he be jailed for contempt of court if he fails to show up at the Milimani High Court on January 27, 2025. The case revolves around the mysterious disappearance of the Mlolongo Four, whose whereabouts remain unknown since their abduction in December 2024. Kalonzo’s firm stance comes after Kanja, along with DCI boss Mohamed Amin, repeatedly ignored court summons to explain the abductions, sparking public outrage and intensifying the call for justice.

“We are here to remind the people of Nairobi: Usife Moyo. This is a democratic country, and everyone—yes, even the president—must obey the law,” Kalonzo declared in a statement on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

At the Milimani High Court in Nairobi on Monday, Kalonzo will demand that the IG show up and provide answers. If Kanja fails to appear, he should face jail for contempt, Kalonzo warned.

The Mlolongo Four—Bernard Mbisi Kavingo, Justus Mutumwa, Martin Mwau, and Karani Muema—have been missing since their abduction on December 16, 2024. Despite several court summons, both Kanja and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin have failed to explain the abductions or present the missing individuals.

The police have repeatedly denied holding the four, even as public pressure mounts from leaders, citizens, and civil society groups demanding answers. Kalonzo’s demand for action reflects a broader national frustration with the case and the ongoing lack of accountability.

Justice Chacha Mwita, overseeing the case, rejected a request last week from Kanja and Amin to be excused from court. Kanja had previously promised to attend court when fully briefed on the matter.

Speaking in Kwale County on January 21, 2025, Kanja assured the public that he was committed to presenting a full report when the time was right. “There is no problem; at the right time, I will present myself in court and speak as I have here to the press,” he stated.

The IG also emphasized that the police, in collaboration with DCI officers, had launched a thorough investigation into the rising number of abductions across the country. He vowed to ensure that those responsible would be held accountable.

“We are making progress with investigations into all reported cases of missing persons. I have instructed that these investigations be completed thoroughly, and anyone found responsible will be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” Kanja asserted.
