Kenya joined the rest of the globe on Wednesday to mark World Environment Day. The national celebration was held at the University of Embu.
Present at the event were Environment CS Soipan Tuya and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire. Other attendees included Environment PS Festus Ng’eno, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) board chairperson Emilio Mugo, and Director General Mamo Boru Mamo.
This year’s event was themed ‘Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience’. The day was highlighted by a tree-planting exercise at Kiambuthi Wetland.
NEMA has partnered with the University of Embu, which has adopted the wetland for restoration, aiming to establish a recreational center and protect it from further encroachment.
“Our approach extends beyond tree planting; it encompasses the holistic development of eco-conscious citizens,” said a NEMA representative.
