Mike Sonko

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvii Sonko is well-known nationwide for his volunteer work and his promptness in offering assistance.
Amid the ongoing events in the country, Sonko quickly identifies areas where he can provide help.
Some critics have asserted that the politician’s charitable actions are aimed at gaining political advantage and benefiting himself, labeling it as ‘PR.’
However, Sonko has denied these claims, stating that he has assisted many individuals independently, without expecting anything in return.
Despite his political aspirations not aligning, Sonko remains committed to philanthropy.
During his tenure as senator, Sonko founded a humanitarian organization called the ‘Sonko Rescue Team,’ dedicated to assisting Kenyans during emergencies.
The organization gained greater prominence when he was elected governor of Nairobi, although its operations faced criticism from other leaders, including former governor Evans Kidero.

The team not only addressed issues within Nairobi but also in Machakos, Kericho, and other counties.

Sonko’s philanthropic nature was evident when he supported journalist Kimani Mbugua during his recovery from bipolar disorder.

Kimani Mbugua
Kimani Mbugua was once a television star associated with Royal Media Group. He, however, experienced what his father described as a bipolar disorder. His father stated that the son began experiencing mental health issues after his drink was allegedly tampered with.

During an interview with comedian Oga Obinna, Mbugua’s father claimed that his son’s drink was spiked at a party.

Mike Sonko intervened on behalf of journalist Mbugua and took him to Mathare Mental Hospital, where Kimani has been in recovery.
