Major shift as CS Machogu fails to name top KCPE candidates during results announcement.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Wednesday released the results of the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) but bucked tradition when he did not name the country’s top students.

Machogu announced that the top candidate in the 2022 class scored 431 marks, an improvement from the 428 scored in the previous national exam.

“In the overall performance of the 2022 KCPE examination the overall performance improved compared to that of 2021. The mark of the highest candidate rose four points from 428 to 431 in 2022,” said CS Machogu.

Out of the 1,233,852 candidates who sat KCSE exams in November 2022, 9,443 scored above 400 marks, 307,000 scored above 300 marks, 619,582 had 200 marks and above whereas 1,170 candidates scored between 1 and 99 marks. The Cabinet Secretary did not mention the name of the top student, nor their primary school as it has been traditionally.

However, there was a tie in the top position, which was taken by Fwaro Makokha Robinson and Otieno Lewis Omondi Glen, who scored 431 marks. In March 2022, former Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha named the top students, and their respective schools. Where Bruce Magata Mackenzie of Gilgil Hills Academy emerged top with 428 marks.

The other students in the top 10 category were from Makini School, Holy Family Misihu Girls, Emmanuel Academy, Kitengela International School, Rofin Field Junior Secondary School, White Star Academy, Stopping Stone Preparatory, Nyagwa Primary School, PCEA Mwimbi Boarding Primary School.

On a typical day, when the KCPE results are released, candidates are usually filled with anxiety, hoping that their names will be called out by the CS as among top performers.
