Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the death of influencer Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
Speaking at Embu Town Market, the MP said the statement issued by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja did not fully address key questions and called for further clarification from the authorities.
Mukunji noted the growing number of cases involving young Kenyans who die during police encounters, emphasizing the need to uphold the constitutional duty of law enforcement to protect all citizens.
He reiterated that freedom of expression is a constitutional right and that no one should face harm for sharing their views, regardless of political affiliation or opinion.
Raising questions about the handling of Ojwang’s case, the MP pointed to the decision to transfer the influencer from Homa Bay County to Nairobi, urging transparency in the processes that followed his arrest.
Mukunji also proposed the introduction of legislation requiring that families be notified immediately when a loved one is taken into custody. He stressed that such measures could help build public trust and prevent further incidents of unexplained deaths in detention.
