Morara Responds to Tax Evasion Allegations, Labels KRA Probe a Political Witch-Hunt

Political activist Morara Kebaso has firmly rejected accusations of tax evasion, describing the Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) investigation as a politically motivated effort to silence his critical voice.

The allegations surfaced following a report by a local media outlet, which claimed that Morara failed to remit Ksh27 million in taxes over the past three years, despite generating Ksh186 million from his five businesses. According to KRA, Morara has been filing nil returns and is not registered for Value Added Tax (VAT), raising concerns about undeclared income.

KRA’s report also highlighted that Morara holds three bank accounts—two linked to real estate and furniture businesses—and that these accounts receive payments through paybill services.

In response, Morara has maintained his innocence, insisting that he is a law-abiding citizen committed to fulfilling his tax obligations. In a statement issued on Thursday, January 9, 2025, he emphasized that tax matters are private and should not be investigated in the media.

“Tax matters are private and confidential. I don’t know why mine is being investigated in the media. I have always been ready and willing to lawfully pay all taxes,” he said.

Morara further suggested that the investigation is a political witch-hunt aimed at coercing him into submission. He criticized the use of state agencies to stifle dissent, vowing to continue his advocacy for truth and accountability.

“State agencies should not be weaponized to silence voices of truth and accountability. This is a clear attempt to push me to my knees so that I agree to collaborate with corrupt leaders in the mismanagement of our country. Kenyans are wise and can distinguish between a genuine tax investigation and a political witch-hunt. I will continue to speak truth to power without fear,” he declared.

As the investigation continues, Morara’s defiance underscores his commitment to remaining an outspoken critic, regardless of the challenges posed by the ongoing tax probe.
