MPs strongly opposes creating a new peace commission.

The Interior Ministry, led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, faced a setback as members of parliament turned down a proposal to establish a new peace commission.

The National Assembly Committee on Cohesion and Equal Opportunities, in a statement released on November 15, 2024, unanimously objected to the Interior Ministry’s proposal to create the National Peace-building Commission (NPC), arguing it is unnecessary and duplicates existing responsibilities.

The MPs suggested this after their Mombasa meeting with the NCIC.

NCIC’s report states that the Peace Building Fund would also be under the proposed Commission’s management.

“The suggestions are outlined in a document created by the group of specialists that was formed and financially supported by the Ministry of Interior,” stated Samuel Kobia, the chairperson of NCIC, to the Committee.

The UNPD started drafting the report and assigned the Interior ministry to lead the process. He mentioned that NCIC was specifically asked to share their opinions with the Committee of experts, similar to other organizations.

The establishment of new Commissions that fail to adequately serve Kenyans has caused much unease among citizens. He emphasized that establishing a new Commission while the NCIC already exists will make Kenyans anxious.

“The priority should be to increase funding for NCIC, who are undernourished financially and are in dire need.”

Teso North MP Oku Kaunya stated that establishing a new Commission would result in significant financial consequences. He pointed out that Kenyans will have to bear the financial burden.
