The Opposition is now urging Kenyans to hold President William Ruto accountable for the police’s alleged phone surveillance, which has been associated with the tracking and subsequent abduction of government critics. Recent media reports have highlighted claims that Kenya’s telecommunications companies are purportedly sharing personal data of individuals deemed significant with police forces to monitor their activities.
Led by Kalonzo Musyoka, the Wiper Party leader, the opposition figures condemned the alleged collaboration between police and communication firms, asserting that it aims to facilitate state-sponsored abductions, hijackings, and extrajudicial killings. They criticized Ruto for dismissing reports of police abductions as mere fabrications and propaganda, arguing that such dismissals are detrimental to the nation. Kalonzo emphasized that Ruto’s misguided attempts to revert Kenya to a police state are damaging, stating, “The buck stops with him.” He called for Ruto’s immediate resignation, citing a breach of his oath to uphold the Constitution and serve the Kenyan public faithfully. Furthermore, the Opposition named several high-ranking officials, including the National Intelligence Service director and the head of the Criminal Investigations Department, as individuals who should be held criminally accountable for infringing on the rights of Kenyans. Kalonzo insisted that their superiors, including the Inspector General of Police and the Interior Minister, must also be held responsible for overseeing a police service that appears to prioritize the interests of a select few political elites over the safety of the Kenyan populace.
