President William Ruto has committed Ksh100 million to support a nationwide campaign against gender-based violence (GBV) as the country gears up for the 16 Days of Activism. Speaking at State House Nairobi on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Ruto announced the launch of the “Safe Homes, Safe Spaces” initiative, which will be spearheaded by women leaders to address the alarming rise in femicide and GBV.
“As we approach the 16 Days of Activism, the women leaders and I are united in declaring that femicide has no place in Kenya,” Ruto said. “This campaign will receive full government support, and I urge every Kenyan to join the movement, speak out, and stand united against femicide.”
Nationwide Awareness Campaign
The campaign, running from November 25 to December 10, 2024, aims to educate communities about the signs of abuse, its causes, and resources available to victims. “Awareness is a critical step in prevention,” Ruto emphasized. “Communities must come together to protect the vulnerable and create a society where every woman lives without fear.”
Rising Concern Over Femicide
The urgency of this initiative is underscored by statistics from Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Langat, who reported 97 femicide cases in the last three months. “Murders against women have increased at an alarming rate,” Langat said. “This troubling trend highlights the urgent need for focused action and collaboration to tackle the widespread issue of gender-based violence.”
Ruto attributed the rise in femicide to both moral and criminal issues and pledged to empower law enforcement to track down perpetrators. “We have a responsibility to address these challenges comprehensively,” he stated. “My government will provide resources for the police and other stakeholders to deal with this crisis.”
A Call to Action
The President called on all Kenyans to take part in the upcoming campaign. “This is a shared responsibility. By raising awareness, educating others, and standing together, we can make a significant difference,” Ruto said.
With the 16 Days of Activism approaching, the #EndGBV movement invites all Kenyans to join the conversation and champion the fight against femicide. Together, the nation can build a safer and more inclusive future for all.
