Sifuna Challenges Ruto to Step Down, Back Raila in 2027: “Ndio Tujue Broad-Based Inafanya”

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has stirred political waters by suggesting President William Ruto should step aside in 2027 and support ODM leader Raila Odinga—if the Kenya Kwanza administration truly believes in a “broad-based” government.

Speaking during a fundraiser in Migori County, Sifuna, who is also ODM’s Secretary-General, dismissed the inclusivity narrative pushed by Ruto’s allies, saying real power-sharing must be seen at the top.

“If you love this broad-based government so much, and as Kiborek said, when the work became too much for Ruto, he looked for Raila—who is now holding this government together—then in 2027, Ruto should step back and let Baba lead,” Sifuna told a cheering crowd.

“That’s the only broad-based government Sifuna will recognise—Ruto finishing his term in 2027 and handing over to Baba. Baba is the one doing the work now, isn’t he?”

ODM Still Eyeing the Presidency

Sifuna emphasized that ODM has not abandoned its political ambitions despite being part of the broad-based talks.

“We held grassroots elections. Yes, there were challenges, but we’ll resolve them. We’re preparing our party to contest the presidency in 2027. We haven’t stepped back from our goal to lead this nation.”

He also clarified details of the Kenya Kwanza-ODM Memorandum of Understanding.

“I was there when we signed the MOU. I’ve read and understood it. It does not say that ODM won’t field a presidential candidate in 2027. It simply states that Kenya Kwanza will respect the constitution and the law.”

Raising Security Concerns

Sifuna further criticized the government for failing to guarantee security, citing recent attacks on politicians.

He referenced the shooting of Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were under unclear circumstances.

“We said the government must respect the constitution and ensure peace. We buried Kasipul MP who was shot, yet to date, we don’t know who sent those people.”

He also mentioned Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, whose vehicle was shot at and who was allegedly detained by unknown individuals.

“His car was attacked, and now we hear he’s been taken, but we don’t know by whom. Let those talking about ‘broad-based’ government come and explain if this is what we agreed on,” Sifuna said.
