Sudan Strikes Back: Kenya Faces Trade Ban Over RSF Controversy

Sudan has suspended all imports from Kenya indefinitely in retaliation for Nairobi’s decision to host leaders of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) last month.

In a decree issued by Sudan’s Ministry of Trade and Supply, the government cited national security concerns and accused Kenya of escalating tensions by facilitating RSF activities. The decision follows a Cabinet resolution aimed at preserving Sudan’s sovereignty.

“Based on Cabinet Resolution No. 129 of 2024 and recommendations from the Sovereignty Council, we have decided to suspend all imports from Kenya through all ports, crossings, airports, and outlets, effective immediately,” the statement read.

Sudan has been embroiled in a deadly conflict since April 2023, with its army controlling the eastern and northern regions, while RSF forces dominate the west and south. Kenya’s move to host RSF leaders—who recently signed a founding charter to form a parallel government—has sparked regional concerns.

Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Kenya’s involvement, accusing it of violating Sudan’s sovereignty. “Hosting leaders of the terrorist RSF militia and allowing them to carry out political and propaganda activities constitutes endorsement of and complicity in their heinous crimes,” the ministry stated.

The African Union also weighed in, warning that the move could deepen divisions within Sudan. “The Council does not recognize any purported parallel government or entity in Sudan,” it declared.

In response, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi defended Nairobi’s stance, emphasizing that Kenya was acting in the spirit of peace negotiations.

“This is not the first time Sudanese groups have sought solutions through neighboring countries,” Mudavadi said. “RSF and Sudanese civilian groups presenting their roadmap in Nairobi aligns with Kenya’s peace-building role, providing a neutral platform for conflict resolution.”

With Sudan enforcing trade restrictions and diplomatic tensions rising, the fallout from Kenya’s decision may have lasting regional consequences.
