The Billionaire Breakup: Inside the Musk–Trump Fallout

After a dramatic public clash, U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk have taken a step back from the spotlight — signaling a cooling of tensions after their once-powerful alliance imploded in full view of the world.

What started as a policy disagreement quickly escalated into a whirlwind of personal attacks and social media sparring, ending with both figures exchanging unusually restrained parting words on Friday evening.

From Alliance to Feud

The feud erupted on Thursday after disagreements over what Trump called his “big beautiful bill.” Musk, who has become increasingly vocal in political spaces, didn’t hold back — triggering a cascade of back-and-forth jabs that played out across the internet.

Politics, egos, and ambitions collided as Trump and Musk exchanged barbs, with critics on both sides weighing in. The once-mutual admiration between the world’s richest man and the world’s most powerful leader quickly devolved into open hostility.

Hostilities Cool — For Now

By Friday, however, the tone had softened. Trump, when asked about Musk, told reporters, “I just wish him well.” Musk responded similarly on X (formerly Twitter), replying with a simple, “Likewise.”

Yet the rift remains unresolved. Despite the cordial front, Trump made it clear that a reconciliation is not in the works — at least for now.

“I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot…Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” he said earlier on.

Trump Speaks Out on Reconciliation

In a Friday phone interview, Trump reiterated his reluctance to reconnect with Musk, adding, “I’m not even thinking about Elon. He’s got a problem. The poor guy’s got a problem.”

Still, he didn’t entirely shut the door on future talks — leaving the status of their relationship hanging in limbo.

When Business Meets Politics

The fallout may extend beyond words. On Air Force One, Trump hinted at launching a formal review into Musk’s federal contracts — a move that could have significant financial implications for Tesla and SpaceX.

“We’ll take a look at everything… It’s a lot of money,” Trump said, referencing Musk’s government subsidies and contracts. A White House official later confirmed that Trump is also considering removing a red Tesla Model S he previously acquired for staff use.

“I hope he does well with Tesla,” Trump added, while clearly distancing himself from any personal or professional ties to Musk.

Musk’s Next Political Move?

Meanwhile, Musk appears to be charting his own course. On X, he floated the idea of launching a new centrist political party, claiming it would represent “the 80% in the middle.” A poll on the platform suggests significant support for the idea — a move that could further shake up U.S. politics.

Conclusion

Once seen as a formidable partnership blending wealth and political power, the Musk–Trump alliance now lies in tatters. With both men trading jabs one day and exchanging polite farewells the next, their future relationship remains uncertain — and the fallout could reshape more than just headlines.
