President William Ruto on Tuesday handed over 1,080 housing units to residents of Mukuru Kwa Njenga in Nairobi, marking a major milestone in his Affordable Housing Programme. Visibly elated, the Head of State described the moment as a vindication of his long-held vision, one that many critics once dismissed as unrealistic.
During the handover ceremony, President Ruto did not hold back his joy. He broke into praise songs, quoted Bible verses, and even led a prayer—emphasizing the spiritual and social significance of the occasion.
“They told me that it is not possible, that I am a liar, and today I am here,” Ruto declared passionately. “Has it not been possible? Is it true or a lie?”
He described the event as one of the most consequential days of his political journey. “Today I can hand over keys to citizens of our nation—people who would never have had a chance in life. But today, they have keys not just to doors, but to dignity. We are making a difference in the lives of Kenyans.”
Ruto affirmed that this was only the beginning. He announced that another 5,000 units will be handed over in August or September, followed by another batch in the new year, with a goal of delivering 13,000 houses in total for the Mukuru area.
The president noted that the project has already injected Ksh.11 billion into construction and surrounding developments, with a cumulative Ksh.28 billion flowing into the economy from this initiative alone.
Beyond just housing, the development promises to transform the neighborhood into a vibrant economic hub. “Corner shops, daycares, schools, clinics, digital start-ups—young people will set up gyms, salons, studios, and delivery services. It’s a new lease of life for Mukuru,” said Ruto.
The site boasts 3.2km of roads, 14,321 square metres of parking, 9km of walkways, and 3.9km of sewer lines. It also includes critical infrastructure such as a fire station, health centre, daycare facilities, a strip mall, 32 transformer houses, waste rooms, pump rooms, and more.
A comprehensive water system has been installed, featuring a 5-million-litre underground tank, high-level storage tanks with 210,000-litre capacity, booster pumps, and a fire water system—all aimed at dignifying and safeguarding residents’ lives.
President Ruto encouraged more Kenyans to register on the Boma Yangu website to increase their chances of securing a home through the government’s affordable housing programme.
“This is proof that it is possible to move the desolate and give them a decent living,” he concluded. “And I’m not done yet.”
