In recent years, Uji Power has quietly taken over as one of Nairobi’s favorite quick meals. Praised as a healthy, organic option, this nutrient-packed drink has become a go-to for many Kenyans looking for an affordable, convenient way to stay energized throughout the day. But what exactly makes Uji Power so popular, and are the health claims behind it true? Here’s a closer look.
Uji Power is more than just a drink — it’s a wholesome meal in a cup. From the bustling Central Business District to the quieter estates and suburbs of Nairobi, kiosks selling Uji Power have popped up everywhere, meeting the demand of its growing fans.
People of all ages and backgrounds enjoy Uji Power, drawn by its affordability, accessibility, and the fact that it offers a healthier alternative to common junk foods. Many see it as a convenient meal substitute, especially for busy workers who don’t have the time or resources to prepare full meals.
Millicent, a vendor in Umoja estate, describes Uji Power as a “heavy meal” that keeps her customers fueled during tough economic times when affording three square meals daily can be a challenge.
While the exact recipe may vary between vendors, Uji Power generally combines wholesome ingredients such as arrowroots, groundnuts or peanut butter, milk, sweet potatoes, cassava, pumpkin seed powder, and natural sweeteners like honey or sugar. Some versions also include sesame seeds, chia, and flax seeds to boost nutrition. Vendors skillfully mix these components to achieve a balanced taste and rich texture. When prepared well, the drink offers a nourishing, nutrient-dense meal that keeps partakers energized.
Social media has played a big role in boosting Uji Power’s reputation, especially with claims that it supports sexual wellness for men. While these claims have helped spread its popularity, they remain largely anecdotal.
In response to the rising interest and mixed claims, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) launched an investigation in April 2024 to verify the authenticity of Uji Power’s health benefits.
Peter Kaigwara, KEBS Director of Market Surveillance, said, “We’ve received intelligence on these products (Uji Power and okra), and we’re starting an inquiry immediately.”
Due to recipe variations, conclusive scientific proof is difficult, but nutritionists generally agree that Uji Power is a healthy, nutrient-dense meal option.
As research into Uji Power continues, its popularity shows no signs of fading. Affordable, nutritious, and convenient, it has become a trusted choice for many Kenyans navigating busy days and tight budgets.
Whether you see it as a quick snack, a meal replacement, or simply a tasty treat, Uji Power’s blend of wholesome ingredients and cultural appeal make it a fascinating part of Nairobi’s food scene.
