‘Whatever Sacrifices Necessary’: Gachagua Vows to End Ruto’s Presidency in 2027

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pledged to rally Kenyans against President William Ruto’s administration, vowing to make his re-election in the 2027 general election unattainable.

Since his impeachment last October, Gachagua has been an outspoken critic of Ruto, accusing him of leading an intolerant and autocratic government. On Monday, Gachagua joined opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa at the launch of Wamalwa’s new Democratic Action Party (DAP) headquarters in Nairobi, where he renewed his commitment to challenging Ruto.

“We are part of this team and will walk this journey together to liberate this country,” Gachagua declared. “We will make whatever sacrifices necessary to make sure William Ruto is a one-term president.”

Gachagua accused President Ruto of running a “one-man show,” stifling dissent, and ignoring the voices of his ministers. He claimed that policies like unpopular tax hikes, which triggered deadly nationwide protests, demonstrated the President’s disregard for public concerns.

“The government he leads is a one-man show; he wants his way, and all those ministers you see there are flower girls,” Gachagua said. “I was the only one who could stand up to him and say, ‘Hey boss, this can’t work.’ It’s a praise-and-worship choir, and I could not fit in it.”

Kalonzo Musyoka, who served as Kenya’s 10th vice-president, echoed Gachagua’s sentiments, calling on Kenyans to remain vigilant and document inflammatory remarks by Ruto and his government.

“Document every careless statement and forward them to the International Criminal Court; that is the only language William Ruto understands,” Musyoka said. “Kenyans are amazing people. If you try to isolate the Mt. Kenya region, the people will report you for crimes against humanity and follow it to its conclusion.”

The opposition leaders also accused Ruto of reviving the outlawed Mungiki gang to foster division in the Mt. Kenya region—a claim the President has repeatedly denied. In response, Ruto labeled his critics “incompetent, clueless, and corrupt,” vowing to remain undeterred by their attacks.

Since his ouster, Gachagua has been forging alliances with political figures he once opposed. Over the weekend, he met with Martha Karua, leader of the NARC Kenya party and Raila Odinga’s running mate in the 2022 elections.

Bearing symbolic gifts of goats, sheep, and farm produce, Gachagua visited Karua at her home in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County. The two leaders vowed to recruit more allies to “liberate” Kenya and counter what they described as Ruto’s “dictatorship.”

Gachagua has also held consultative meetings at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County with leaders from various sectors, signaling his determination to shape his political future.

As political temperatures rise ahead of the 2027 elections, Gachagua’s growing alliances and unwavering criticism of President Ruto set the stage for a fierce political showdown. Whether his efforts will sway Kenyans or strengthen the opposition’s cause remains to be seen.
