Senator Chergai has put forward a Constitutional Amendment Bill aimed at extending the term limits for the President and all other elected officials from five years to seven years.
This proposal has been met with significant opposition from the Kenyan public, with some citizens advocating for a reduction of the term limit to three years instead. In response to the bill, the Senate clerk reported receiving over 350,000 emails from concerned citizens nationwide, while his personal phone received approximately 12,000 SMS messages and more than 20,000 WhatsApp communications following the public engagement regarding the proposed changes.
Cherargei, who is the sponsor of the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2024, which seeks to extend the terms for the President, Members of Parliament, Governors, and Members of County Assemblies (MCAs), expressed that he has faced a barrage of reactions, including both criticism and support, stating, “I have been a victim in the last one week. My phone has been called; I have received insults; I have also received praise.” Additionally, the bill proposes the establishment of the Office of the Prime Minister, to be appointed by the President. Despite the controversy surrounding the bill.
Cherargei asserts that a significant portion of the Kenyan populace continues to back the proposal.
