Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faces his moment of reckoning as the Senate impeachment hearing kicks off today. This follows a High Court ruling in Nairobi that declined to block the Senate from hearing the motion.
At 9 a.m., Senators are scheduled to meet behind closed doors for a pre-trial session. By 10 a.m., formal proceedings will begin, including the recital of the Senate’s mandate, review of the rules of procedure, and introduction of key figures—such as representatives from the National Assembly and Gachagua’s legal team.
Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, who moved the impeachment motion, will be joined by lawmakers Otiende Amollo, George Murugara, Peter Kaluma, and John Makali to present the National Assembly’s case.
At around 10:30 a.m., Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye is expected to read the charges against Gachagua, and the Deputy President will be required to enter his plea. Both sides will then be given 30 minutes for opening statements before the hearing proceeds.
The National Assembly will have three hours to present their case, followed by two hours for Gachagua’s legal team to cross-examine. Proceedings will adjourn at 7:30 p.m., with final arguments scheduled for Thursday.
As the nation watches closely, one question remains—will Gachagua survive this political storm?
