Members of Parliament (MPs) are poised to table an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua today at 2:30 PM in the National Assembly. Majority Leader and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah has confirmed that the motion will be presented on the House floor.
To pass the motion, it will require the support of 233 MPs; however, reports indicate that 302 members have already signed in support.
Gachagua’s accusers claim he has violated Article 10 of the Constitution, citing public utterances that they argue are inciteful, reckless, and inflammatory, capable of stirring ethnic hatred. He faces further allegations of violating Articles 147, 148, 174, 186, and 189, which relate to his conduct and responsibilities as the principal assistant to the President.
Additionally, Gachagua must defend himself against accusations of corruptly and unlawfully acquiring assets with taxpayers’ money, with these assets reportedly located in Nyeri, Nairobi, and Kilifi counties.
Should the motion pass, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula will notify Senate Speaker Amason Kingi of the resolution within two days for further action.
Gachagua’s tenure has been marred by a tumultuous relationship with President William Ruto and some of his allies. This rift has prompted the embattled Deputy President to caution those pursuing the impeachment, warning that such actions could erode Ruto’s trust among the Mt. Kenya region.
“I urge President Ruto to put his house in order and allow us to work. We have a mandate to fulfill to the Kenyan people; we need to get down to work,” he stated.
