‘Ksh1.5M is your own imagination’ – Kisii Senator and Homa Bay MP Clash in Explosive Feud.

A public row has erupted between Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, sparking tensions after the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The clash, which unfolded on national television and escalated on social media, highlights growing divisions between Members of Parliament and Senators over Kenya’s political climate and funding practices.

It began when Senator Onyonka appeared in a televised interview, criticizing MPs for being disconnected from the struggles of ordinary Kenyans. Onyonka pointed to the overwhelming vote to impeach Gachagua as evidence of political missteps by the National Assembly.

“Members of Parliament need to understand that their actions are being closely watched. What they’re doing has a significant impact on the public,” Onyonka stated.

His remarks quickly provoked a sharp response from Peter Kaluma, who accused Onyonka of hypocrisy. Kaluma claimed that Senators were quietly pocketing hefty sums under the guise of an oversight fund.

“Each Senator takes home over Ksh1.5 million each month as ‘Senate Oversight Fund,’ in addition to their salary,” Kaluma tweeted. “Brother @RichardOnyonka_, what integrity are you talking about?”

Onyonka swiftly hit back, dismissing Kaluma’s claims as unfounded.

“My brother in ODM, George Kaluma, as a Senator I earn ZERO shillings from the oversight fund. The Ksh1.5 million is your imagination. What’s available is only for the oversight team’s recurrent costs. Get your facts right!” Onyonka replied on Twitter.

This exchange reflects growing frustration within Kenya’s legislative bodies. The impeachment vote against Gachagua seems to have exposed deeper grievances between MPs and Senators, as well as public scrutiny of how both chambers operate.

As Kenyans continue to watch their leaders closely, the feud between Onyonka and Kaluma serves as a reminder of the simmering tensions within the country’s political class. Whether these divisions will affect future legislative processes remains to be seen.
