Man Arrested with Human Body Parts in Backpack Detained for 21 Days

Milimani High Court Senior Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe granted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) 21 days to detain John Kyama Wambua to allow for the completion of investigations into the murder of 19-year-old Joy Fridah Munani.

Wambua was arrested on January 21, 2025, near Kelly Towers in Huruma and booked at the Huruma police station. He is alleged to have killed Munani on January 20, 2025, in the Kasonova area of Nairobi County.

According to an affidavit by DCI officer Kassim Yakub, Wambua confessed to killing Munani after finding her with another man. The confrontation allegedly escalated into a heated argument, leading to her death. Wambua reportedly dismembered her body in an attempt to dispose of it.

“That respondent alleged that he found his partner named Joy Fridah Munani (deceased) with another man, and when they got to the house, an argument ensued that led to him committing the act and later chopping the body in order to dispose of it,” the affidavit read.

The DCI is investigating Wambua under Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code, which defines murder and prescribes the death penalty for those convicted.

Yakub told the court that parts of Munani’s body remain missing, and Wambua’s release could interfere with the investigation. He added that the suspect’s life could be in danger due to public outrage over the crime.

Milimani High Court directed Wambua’s detention at Ruaraka Police Station until February 17, 2025, when the case will be mentioned.

This case has left the Kasonova community shocked, with calls for swift justice for Joy Fridah Munani.
