President Ruto’s cabinet appointment triggers by-elections.

The unveiling of a 22-member Cabinet by President William Ruto on Tuesday has triggered by-elections for two parliamentary seats, one senatorial position and a replacement on a nominated senator.
This is after Garissa Township MP Aden Duale, Kandara MP Alice Wahome, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and Nominated Senator Soipan Tuya were named among the 22 Cabinet Secretaries to work in President Ruto’s cabinet, leaving their political seats vacant.

Mr.Murkomen, who formerly served as Senate Majority leader was nominated as CS for Roads, Transport and Public Works. His counterpart Duale, who served as National Assembly Majority Leader since 2013, was nominated CS for Defence. He has represented Garissa Township in the National Assembly since his election in 2007.

However, Alice Wahome who was serving her third term in the position, was nominated as CS for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation while her female counterpart Tuya was delegated to head the Environment and Forestry ministry.

Ms Soya was nominated as a member of the senate by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and she is serving her third term in parliament having been elected as Narok Women Rep in 2013 and 2017.

Elsewhere, a by-election for Bungoma senatorial position still hangs in the balance after Moses Wetangula’s appointment as the National Assembly speaker on September 8, 2022 as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is set to announce the dates when the by-elections shall be conducted.
