In a lighthearted but bold move, former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi playfully warned those poking fun at his distinctive ‘UFO eyes,’ threatening them with 21 days of detention.
On Saturday, December 7, 2024, Havi posted on X (formerly Twitter), jokingly threatening anyone who uses his photo for memes or mocks his eyes with 21 days of detention.
“This photograph and the UFO eyes are copyrighted. Anyone using it in a meme will be kidnapped and detained for 21 days. People should learn not to disrespect the Sixth. Uwinjo, Mary Langri?” Havi wrote, referring to his presidential ambitions as Kenya’s 6th president.
Havi formally announced his bid for the 2027 presidency after months of speculation. Speaking on December 2, 2024, he stressed the need for an alternative to President William Ruto. “I will be running for president in 2027,” he confirmed.
Havi also criticized opposition leader Raila Odinga, suggesting Raila’s focus is shifting toward continental leadership, particularly his bid for chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) during the February 2025 AU Summit in Addis Ababa. If Raila pursues this role, it would likely rule out his 2027 presidential run, making way for Havi.
“If Baba doesn’t want to do it, some of us will,” Havi remarked, emphasizing his determination to run if necessary.
In a previous post, Havi warned Kenyans about the potential candidacy of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, suggesting he could be a worse alternative to Ruto. Havi declared that if former Chief Justice David Maraga declined to run, he would step up.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale urged Havi to be more direct in announcing his presidential intentions. “Why announce your candidacy by beating around the bush? Just come out and say it!” Khalwale tweeted.
While Havi’s first foray into elective politics ended in defeat in 2022, his bold humor and growing political ambitions suggest this might just be the beginning of a much larger campaign ahead.
