If you have attended university or are currently a student, it is very likely that you have participated in a ‘freshers night.’ If you are a demon-chasing Christian, you may not have participated, but I am certain you have heard of it.
These events occur shortly after first-year students arrive with their newly acquired smartphones and preserved dignity. They are promoted extensively across campus, featuring the tagline: ‘kudonjo kumalo.’
These events are characterized by a significant turnout from first-year students seeking campus experiences, as well as older students looking for new encounters and casual relationships—sex, money, dance, and more sex.
These events represent the campus equivalent of vibrant and youthful nightlife. In hindsight, many innocent girls lose their virginity during these events.
“You only live once,” campus students remark as they dance and grind against one another to the rhythms of popular songs. As the music plays, often characterized by poor vocals and a lack of harmony, a girl may be drawn into a male’s embrace with a drink.
This year’s fresher night resulted in videos of young girls going viral on social media, prompting discussions among Kenyans about whether young girls attend university to pursue education or to engage in prostitution. Several videos gained viral attention on the notorious Telegram app, leaving many astonished.
