Kiambu Senator now calls for abolition of Parliamentary system

Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa has advocated for the dissolution of Kenya’s National Assembly, contending that the role of Members of Parliament (MPs) is both redundant and ineffective.

During an interview on the Oga Obinna TV show, he articulated his belief that the responsibilities currently assigned to MPs could be competently managed by the Members of County Assembly (MCAs). He asserted that the Senate is fully capable of undertaking the functions of MPs, such as vetting Cabinet Secretaries and the Inspector General, as well as executing impeachment processes.

Karungo criticized the excessive number of MPs, claiming they have become disconnected from their constituents and merely serve as “voting machines” for the government, particularly referencing the recent approval of the contentious Finance Bill and the impeachment of the Deputy President.

The Senator further lamented that MPs often abandon their constituents upon arriving in Nairobi, neglecting their primary duty of holding the President accountable in favor of defending the executive branch.

He has proposed a motion aimed at diminishing the influence of politicians and reallocating funds to ministries, ensuring the continuity of government projects irrespective of MPs’ involvement. Reflecting on his experience as an MCA, he emphasized the necessity for the President to be accountable for budget expenditures, rather than being shielded by MPs.

Karungo underscored the significance of grassroots leadership, asserting that MCAs are the most vital representatives in the nation due to their proximity to the populace and their understanding of community needs.
