Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has unveiled an agreement signed by Kenya Kwanza co-principals to counter accusations of tribalism directed at him during a National Assembly session. In an explosive press conference on Monday evening, Gachagua claimed that his ‘shareholders’ remarks have been weaponized against him. He emphasized that President William Ruto consented to a shareholding pact prior to the 2024 election.
In the Kenya Kwanza coalition agreement, Gachagua revealed that National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi negotiated their positions in exchange for securing 70% of the votes for Ruto in the Western region.
He stated, “ANC will be allocated the position of Prime Cabinet Secretary to be established within 14 days. FORD Kenya will receive the position of Speaker of the National Assembly. According to Article 21 of the power-sharing agreement, ANC and FORD Kenya would hold a 30% share of national government positions.”
The beleaguered Deputy President insisted that regional leaders bargained with the President for shares, asserting that the leaders of the parties forming the Kenya Kwanza coalition equally demanded their share of the political pie. “I have never talked about sharing resources; I have been talking about power sharing. People deserve their fair share of power according to this agreement,” Gachagua clarified.
The remarks about shareholders made by the Deputy President have contributed to growing calls from Members of Parliament for his resignation. A 100-page impeachment motion tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse on October 1, 2024, accuses Gachagua of dividing the nation along tribal lines.
Additionally, Gachagua faces allegations of undermining the presidency, violating his oath of office, and contradicting the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
As the Deputy President prepares to stand trial before the National Assembly on Tuesday, all eyes will be on the unfolding drama that could reshape Kenya’s political landscape. With a legal team led by seasoned lawyer Paul Mwite, Gachagua aims to defend not only his position but also the integrity of the Kenya Kwanza coalition. Will the revelations about power-sharing agreements calm the storm or intensify the calls for his impeachment? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: the stakes have never been higher.
