Mixed Signals: The Gen Z Protests and Government’s Perplexing Stance.

When the youth-led protests began on June 18, 2024, observers were astonished by how the Gen Z demonstrators executed their civic actions with style and tech-savviness. Their peaceful marches, documented in real-time on platforms like X, Instagram, and TikTok, contrasted starkly with the chaotic protests of the past.

These well-dressed, articulate youths were protesting the Finance Bill 2024, which had been swiftly passed by Parliament despite public outcry. On June 27, the protests turned violent, with allegations of infiltration by hooligans and reports of police brutality.

The government’s response has been inconsistent. President Ruto initially urged the passing of the bill but later declined to sign it, citing public opposition. MP John Kiarie and MP Oscar Sudi also issued conflicting statements, with Kiarie apologizing for his dismissive remarks about the protests and Sudi alternately praising and condemning the demonstrators.

President Ruto’s declaration of the protests as a threat to the republic further fueled tensions, leading to another press conference where he softened his stance, blaming criminal elements for the chaos. Accusations against various entities, including the Ford Foundation, for allegedly funding the protests have surfaced but remain unsubstantiated.

The Gen Z protests, marked by their unity and resolve, continue to challenge the government, highlighting the disconnect between the leadership and the youth. As the demonstrations persist, the government’s contradictory messages only add to the confusion and unrest.
