Nandi County Demonstrations to hold demonstrations.
A segment of residents in Nandi County is expected to engage in confrontations with police today as they protest for the removal of Governor Stephen Sang.
The demonstrators are likely to face challenges with law enforcement, which has previously prohibited the planned protests.
Nonetheless, Senator Samson Cherargei, who will be leading the demonstrations, announced on Monday, November 11, 2024, that the activities will proceed as scheduled despite the police’s prohibition.
In a statement shared via his official social media accounts on Monday, November 11, 2024, Cherargei confirmed the peaceful protests were organized for November 12 and 13, 2024. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei indicated that the demonstrations will proceed despite the police ban.
The lawmaker contends that the protests are intended to call for the impeachment of Governor Sang.
Cherargei further asserted that the police’s decision to prohibit the planned demonstrations contravenes the constitutional guarantee outlined in Article 37, which protects the right to peaceful assembly.
“I have observed with considerable concern and regret the action taken by the Nandi County police to prohibit tomorrow’s peaceful demonstration advocating for the impeachment of the ineffective Sang and his nonfunctional CECMs.
“This undermines the constitutional provision of Article 37 that guarantees the right to peacefully demonstrate,” Cherargei stated.
