‘No Gachagua, No government’: Nyeri residents protest against Gachagua impeachment motion.

The public participation process allowing Kenyans to share their opinions on the special motion to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office officially commenced nationwide on Friday. While the process unfolded as intended across most counties, Nyeri County experienced a notable exception.

Nyeri residents took to the streets in significant numbers to protest the motion for Gachagua’s impeachment. Demonstrators barricaded major roads and ignited bonfires, effectively bringing daily activities to a standstill.

Additionally, residents alleged that some government officials were offering them bribes of Ksh.500 to garner support for the impeachment motion against Deputy President Gachagua.

“Unapea watu form wasign ati upatie watu mia tano. Hatutaki hiyo mia tano…tunajua kujitaftia…No Rigathi…no government,” one resident said, reflecting the sentiment of those opposing the motion.

“Msiguze mlima; tuko na Rigathi!” another added.

Police are currently attempting to restore order in Nyeri County.
