Okiya Omtatah faults NTSA over procurement of digital number plates.

Busia Senator cum activist Okiya Omtatah has challenged the process involved in the roll out of digital number plates.

According to Omtatah, there is a scheme by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to acquire the digital number plates without following a due tender process.

“I am in possession of a memo written on September 6 by NTSA. It is from the director of registration and licensing to the director general, asking him to give an order for direct procuring,” he said.

“What surprises me is, if these number plates are ready, and are ready for use… samples have been launched, what is the need for this procurement?” Omtatah posed.

However on August 30, the Ministry of Interior and that of Transport unveiled the new digital plates which will be installed on cars, motorcycles and trailers.

Motorists are also required to install the new plates on their cars within a period of 18 months, and replacement on existing vehicles will start from October 1.

“When the NTSA team calls on Kenyans to change the plates, let us obey and get it done within those 18 months,” Interior CS Fred Matiang’I said while unveiling the digital plates on August 30.
