Kathiani Member of Parliament (MP) Robert Mbui has criticized the National Assembly for what he characterized as a lack of competence in developing and establishing crucial policies impacting the country.
During an interview with a local TV station, the lawmaker voiced his dissatisfaction with the parliament’s tendency to alter its stance on significant policies in response to changes in President William Ruto’s position.
He argued that the ongoing trend, exemplified by the president’s cancellation of multibillion-shilling agreements with the contentious Adani Group after MPs initially expressed support, has revealed the parliament’s true nature.
Furthermore, he indicated that this pattern of adapting to the president’s narrative may result in the majority of lawmakers being unable to secure re-election in 2027 due to their failure to adequately represent their constituents.
“The parliament of Kenya is far from foolish; they are consistently shifting their positions. They may be fully in support of a situation but when the Head of State speaks, they suddenly align with the complete opposite,” he stated.
“I believe the Head of State has uncovered the parliament’s true colors, which is why my party leader asserted that 95 percent of this parliament will likely not return, having compromised their integrity instead of fulfilling their responsibilities,” he added.
On Thursday, November 21, 2024, President Ruto announced the cancellation of two significant agreements with the Adani Group.
The canceled deals involved the expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and the Power Transmission Line Project.
This decision followed the indictment of Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani by the US Department of Justice over a bribery scheme reportedly exceeding 32 billion in payments to Indian government officials in order to secure solar energy contracts.
