Lilian Ng’ang’a, a prominent entrepreneur and wife of musician Juliani, has urged Kenyans to adopt a more respectful tone when criticizing the government. In a recent statement, she emphasized that while holding leaders accountable is essential, the use of insults and vulgar language undermines the message and purpose of such critiques.
Lilian, who previously served as Machakos First Lady, highlighted the importance of maintaining dignity and maturity in public discourse. “There is a need for us to continue faulting the government for its failures and transgressions. However, using vulgar language and showing total disrespect is unacceptable. Pass your message across in a mature and respectable manner. Adding insults dilutes the purpose,” she advised.
Her comments come amidst a surge in offensive and scathing criticisms of government officials, particularly during the anti-Finance Bill protests. This trend has seen a rise in online tirades, including AI-generated images and cartoons that lampoon political figures, often accompanied by harsh language.
One incident that gained significant attention involved 22-year-old Peter Muteti, whose viral post on X (formerly Twitter) depicted President William Ruto in a coffin. The post sparked mixed reactions and eventually led to Muteti’s abduction by unidentified individuals, prompting public outrage and protests.
Muteti’s family and community staged demonstrations, demanding his release, and he was eventually freed after several days. His father later issued a public apology for his son’s actions, expressing remorse and appealing for forgiveness.
Lilian Ng’ang’a’s call for respectful government critique underscores the power of words and the need for constructive dialogue in fostering meaningful change.
